I painted this piece on a tall, narrow panel, wanting the figure to feel like a slender column rising out of the surface. The woman’s neck is deliberately exaggerated — an architectural line that carries the weight of the head and the quiet tension of the composition. Her face is turned slightly to the side, eyes reduced to dark vertical strokes and a simple angular nose; these pared-down features let expression come from tilt and color rather than detailed anatomy.

Blue dominates: layered ultramarines and ceruleans build the planes of skin and hair, painted in thick, deliberate strokes so the paint itself becomes a landscape of light and shadow. Against the cool blues I dropped in a warm yellow for the blouse; that contrast - warm block against cool figure - is meant to create a small, stubborn optimism in the image while also emphasizing her presence. The red of the lips is a single, small punctuation that draws the eye and humanizes the otherwise stylized face.
