About the Artist

Born in Interlaken, Switzerland, Stefan Geissbühler moved to the USA in 1992 to pursue his art career.  Since 1992 he has worked as a full time artist and has successfully sold his work to numerous private and corporate collectors, both in the USA and abroad.  Travel, nature and music are his primary sources of inspiration. His most recent work focuses on abstractions that range from freestyle forms and figurative themes, to loosely representational landscapes.  A common thread is his layering of vibrant colors to create art that visually sings.

Stefan’s artwork can be found in many national and international, private and corporate collections, including MetLife Insurance, AAM Recordings, the Chamber Music Society of St. Louis (CMSSL), and Casino Kursaal Bern (Switzerland).  Most recently, Stefan was commissioned by CMSSL to create two paintings for presentation as gifts to the internationally known conductor Leonard Slatkin, and Centene Corporation CEO Michael F. Neidorff.

About the Artwork

Stefan primarily uses acrylic paints and prefers to use masonite primed with gesso.  The smoothness of the masonite offers Stefan the freedom to achieve desired textures, and rigidity of this substrate supports his technique of painting with relatively stiff spackling knives.

Stefan begins a painting with a loose outline of the subject.  He then carefully starts to layer the paints.  Depending on the desired look for the painting, Stefan either applies thin, translucent layers, or heavier, color-saturated layers of the impasto style.  He finishes by either using a brush or the edge of a spackling knife to create the loose, sketchy outlines of the subject.  Occasionally, he adds visual emphasis to the subject by using a sharp metal tool to scratch thin accent lines into the paint.

Stefan carefully hand-crafts his own frames.  A frame consist of a light-weight, ebony-stained oak panel, on top of which the painting is “floated” using four brushed-metal cylinders.
